I have been a customer for 8 months. I am not sure what all the hoopla is, because every month my site has problems. I would change, but I am convinced that all webhosts are the same. When your site works its great when it doesn't its crap. Its too much trouble to change. But just because this site is rated high don't be fooled that it is trouble free. My site has been down for over 24 hours, but they are working on it. That's great. Of course it took 23 hours for them to admit its their problem and they will have it fix in a few more hours. I have been fighting it all day with the understanding the problem was mine.

Do not use these guys they are shocking. Their billing system is a complete mess and they keep billing long after you have cancelled accounts.

when it works it is fine, any issues and they unravel. Tried to cancel a hosting package on-line and they messed-up then started chasing me for monies owed. Customer Support to sort out was a shambleds and they ended up hanging up the phone on me. Disgraceful.

I struggled to get any sense out of 1&1 for over a year. It was like trying to hold a conversation with a speak-your-weight machine. The coup-de-grace was when they set a debt collection agency on me althought they had all the details of a current debit card. Do not touch with an electronic barge-pole.

They are expensive, technically inefficient, and don't give a damn whether you stay or go provided you pay them a full year in advance and then they'll refund the difference. I think not! I will never recommend this lot to my worst enemy...and they are still chasing me after 5 years for 3 months rent.
